Reflection

Intercultural Communication has been a very informative class for me. To be honest, it has really opened my eyes to all the different ways of life that are out there. Many times, each of us get stuck in the bubble of our own lives. I know I fall victim of this. Through this class I have learned the importance of seeing things from another person’s perspective. If I want to be effective at communicating with others of different cultures, I need to understand what it is that they believe in and how they do things. This will help me to be a more effective communicator. It also teaches me to self-less, rather than selfish. This class to me this year this semester treated me right. I felt like I learned a lot about problems I never knew about in this world and in different cultures. It was an awesome experience and one day I hope to continue perusing courses like this and advance my learning of cultures. I loved how every time we came to class we ate snacks that’s a great idea trying new food from different cultures and experience a different taste of something you don’t have every day. In class I felt something while we were watching a movie called freedom writer that movie showed me a lot about what’s happening in schools in our society now and it’s true that’s the type of thing happening now, watching that movie really changed my perspective on how school system really work. Another video that we watched in class that hurt me to see was how the government was treating the American aboriginals and how they have them living in harsh living conditions, I thought that was so wrong  treating them like there different people. To me everyone is the same weather your black, white, Spanish, Irish in the end were all human we should all treat each other the way we want to be treated.  The key then is to understand different points of view. There is more to this life than the culture and identity I represent. Being respectful of those different cultures will increase my awareness, chances of success, and lessen the possibility of discrimination of those that are “different” than me.

freedom writers

In class we watched a movie called freedom writers. Freedom Writers Diary is the amazing true story of strength, courage, and achievement in the face of adversity.  This movie to me has a lot of messages because I feel like when I was in high school this is kind of what happened, no one paying attention in class people throwing paper airplanes always talking when the teacher is talking. People just didn’t have respect and just didn’t care about school just like what happened in the movie. But accept of us getting better as a class and people buying in to what the teacher has to say no one ever listened and that’s what got to me in this movie.

The teacher in the movie is the most hard working strong hatred woman I’ve ever seen, all she was trying to do is become a better teacher and when she got to the school she was at I didn’t think she knew what she was doing or getting in to I didn’t think she could survive. But as I was watching the movie she started to slowly change the kids in her class to become better students by using methods that would work for the kids in her class. It was great how she did it because the class started off not looking at each other and not respecting each other only respecting their own kind and as the movie was about to finish towards the end they looked like a family what she did was completely amazing.

Even though people were doubting her and people were not liking what she was in the class room she kept doing her thing and did what was right for her and the kids she was teaching. This is a great movie I would recommend this movie to anyone it’s just that good.

Today in class we talked with a man on skype. We learned a lot about him we learned that he used to be a woman and he felt the need to change into a man and that’s respectable can’t knock him for what his decisions are. I also learned that it took him awhile to get a bearded and that really fascinated me because I never thought that girls could get beards. Another thing I learned is that he has small feet. He said that he’s had a lot of surgeries done and he feels like he’s getting sore. He says that he wants to be more complete. He says he has nightmares about bathrooms because a couple of times he’s gotten kicked out because of amigos reasons and he worries about the stalls  making sure there closed making sure there is toilet paper these are just something’s he’s worried about in public bathrooms.

The kinds of toys he played with were Lego, ruing around, videogames, sports, Barbie’s he played every sport that he could play.

He wishes that people knew how his personality so he could show people how cool he is. Because while his appearance changed his personality will never change. He says he wasn’t offended when he got the surgery he was offended when people started calling him names because they don’t want to take the time to get to know the person.

He says at this point he just wants to get all the surgeries done and not feel discussed when he looks in the mirror or incomplete he just wants it all done.

While he was talking to us he was telling us not to judge people by the way they look he pretty much said or don’t say anything without knowing who you’re saying it to because you never know who’s feelings your hurting.

Today in class we watched a movie about transsexuals, about men and women turning into different genders. By that I mean a man changing himself into a woman, and a woman turning herself into a man. Watching this movie has me thinking and realizing something there are a lot of people in this world that have a hatred for why people change the way they are, they say its written in the bible that there is no need to change the way your appearance is a woman is a woman and a man is a man. Also in the movie parents changing their kids to be something else at a young age. A woman in the movie that use to be a man said I’m not a man or woman I’m just a human being. So to me this has me confused if you’re not a man or woman how you can call yourself a human being wouldn’t you be something different. I’m not trying to be mean but that really made me mad when she said that quite didn’t make any séance to me. To me this is a huge problem to me I don’t support it because I believe that however you come out at birth is how you look there should be no changing that your body is a temple and you have to cherish it not make repairs to it.

No matter what we do we can’t change people’s opinions of changing their selves to be a man or woman it’s their choice and if they can live with the consequences they should do it. But one day I hope this stops because the more people we stop from changing the more we will populate the earth and what god wants us to do. But that’s just how I feel.

today in class we learned about transsexuals.  a transsexual man is a person who was assigned the female sex at birth on the basis of his genitals but, despite that assignment, identifies as a man and is transitioning or has transitioned to a male gender role vice versa for the girl. i don't agree with why people have to do these things i feel like god crated us in a special way there is no need to change what god crated just stay yourself i feel like that's how it should be. 
i really don't like and disagree with why people do this nt much i can talk about.

Today in class we watched a movie about the Danka tribe and how some of them same from south Sudan came to America to change their life. Lots of them had big plans once they came to America to make money and send it to their parent and family back in Africa. it’s hard enough living by yourself some of these guys didn’t have parents some of them were by themselves working and living with they friends. Me being part of the danka tribe and coming to Canada with a new start with my family it was a new experience for me also. All the new things I saw all the new stuff I ate once I came to Canada I was amazed. Even when I first saw snow for the fist time I was soo socked I didn’t know what to think. I ran outside in a shorts and T-shirt thinking it was still worm outside, went outside noticed it was cold touched the show and ran back in my house and didn’t go out the whole day. The next day I went to school I told people I didn’t know how they could handle the cold weather everyone just laughed at me.

In the end my culture has to realize how much of an opportunity it is to be I America or Canada. We have a chance to get an education better ourselves and take back the knowledge we learned back to our home country so we can teach little kids how to be doctors and professionals. Create something bigger back in Sudan something were the whole world realizes that this country is a country to live in it’s the country to be in.

Today in class we learned about Indian reservations and how the government is making them live in harsh conditions in concentration camps. To me this is not right the way they are making them live makes them look like a bunch of savages but that's not what they are that's not what we are we are all people that deserve to live in the same conditions no matter what. The government has to understand that there are kids living in houses like this and if kids have to were gas masks in there own home then they shouldn't be living there. If this keeps up those kids will not end up doing right when they get older they might do right but living in an environment  like that doesn't give the kids much opportunity to achieve what they would like as they grow up. Unlike some other kids that would have confidence living in a better conditions. 

This really has to stop because to me it looks like the government is taking away the native Americans pride forcing the little kids to learn the American language. I know this for sure if I was born in this generation And I don't know how to speak my language and went back home to Sudan speaking English to my grandma and grandpa back home they will be in shock and think that I have gotten bran washed or something. And honestly I don't think I would be allowed to come back to Canada I think I would have had to just stay the until I learned how to speak my language.

I feel like this is not the governments concern the native Americans know each other better than anyone I feel like if the government just gives them everything els and lets the rock with what they want to do and were they want to live I think it would be way better for them

Today in class we learned about disabilities and how it affects the people that have it and don't have it. Mr Peterson talked about a lot of interesting things that i didn't know about he talked about how disabilities affected his life and how when he was young he they dieqnosed him with his illness. Something i didn't know about Mr Peterson was that he was able to walk a little bit when he was young even though he when he was born they dieqnosed him with the illness. Now Mr Peterson is in a Wealdchair but he's not just staying home letting this affect him he come to school teaches everyday not letting anything slow him down. This will teach me a lot to not always judge when you see someone because when you meet them there personalities might me different  so never judge a person by its cover.

This week in class we watched a movie about food and how food affects other cultures. In this video I learned a lot about what people eat l leaned that most England people don’t like peanut butter and some of them don’t even know what peanut butter and jelly is because it’s such a bad combination over there. I also learned that there are some cultures that eat dog cat and many other nasty things and it also depends if that’s what they have to do in their culture, because in my culture your we eat with our hands and we only can eat with our right hand because the other hand is used for other things like using the toilet so if someone came in our home we would think it’s weird if someone ate with their opposite hand.  

              

  I also learned that people in other countries think the same way we do just like how a dogs and cats are our pet cows goats and such are pets to other people in other countries where I’m from in Sudan a cow and goat are really important to us because a cow we give to a family to marry a bride. And a goat is important to us also because after we get married they cut the head of a goat off right then and there and then they cook the goat for a feast.

Not every place in the world is the same everyone has their own taste in and they like and what they represent as a religion. This video helped me a lot to understand different cultures and it gives me an open mind to try new thing in different religion.

Hate crimes

In class we learned and watched a movie about hate crimes. What is hate crimes that's a good question "Hate crime" generally refers to criminal acts that are seen to have been motivated by bias against one or more of the types above, or of their derivatives. Incidents may involve physical assault, damage to property, bullying, harassment, verbal abuse or insults, or offensive graffiti or letters. I think hate crimes need to stop in the movie it showed a how a boy died and the way he died was the worst way to die as a teen parents dream that that kind of thing doesn't happen to their kids the boy was killed and hung on a fence after being dragged on the floor with a moving car. No one should be a part of this type punishment no matter what you do that is just too crewel and cold blooded.  But there are also people that are fighting agents people like this the boy that died has a friend that stood up for his death and showed people with her actions that this is wrong and that the boy will forever be in there heart and with them were ever he is.

                This movie really affected because I’ve heard of people getting killed and people getting there head chopped off and stuff like that, but for me to be in North Dakota were something like that really happened is a terrible. I know that there is hate everywhere is the world but for someone to hate someone that’s a good kid and that’s quiet makes no seance. I guess those kind of people target quiet people to see if they can push there button’s and I guess it wasn't working so they finished the kid its terrible and I hope it doesn't happen to another soul in the world or in north Dakota parent don’t deserve for the children to get killed for pointless reasons. 

week 3 blog

this week in class i learned alot about Islam and Muslim cultures and i learned that There is no God but Allah,” which is recited daily by the faithful Muslim. The unity of God is a basic tenet of the Muslim faith. Another cherished belief of the Muslims is the belief in angels as messengers of Allah. That concept in Islam differs little from the biblical view. and i learned that Muslims believe that prophets are human and not divine, though some are able to perform miracles to prove their claim. Islamic theology says that all of God's messengers preached the message of Islam submission to the will of God. it was cool learning about this culture because some of the things she said i didn't know about but now i know and i'm willing to spread the knowledge to others.

the aricle i chose is about a terrorist group named isis and in the article they talk about how they are killing innocent people and chopping there head off because they want the Americans to free a man that's in jail that tried bombing america.
isis doesn't believe in cultural values, and if isis did believes in cultural values they would only believe in there selves and there family as to others they have no remorse for them.
this article is really sad to see because you would think that there should be pce in the world but not everywhere you go is peaceful to this article changes are community and there community because when they take people from america and kill them we bomb there city or town so its pretty much all out war. and in society we cant have that.

Holiday

Me and my family celebrate only one holiday and its Christmas the year when our whole family gets together and have fun, eat African food. catch up and enjoy life. but if there is one holiday we  my parents hate it probably would be Halloween  my brothers and sisters don't mind it but my parents don't like how kids can just go to someone else door step and get candy from them. its like what if they put something in the candy and poison you or something or what if they get kidnapped. but still this holiday is good for the candy tho if you take your kids out to get free candy in one day. i feel like almost everyone celebrates Halloween just to get candy. i chose this holiday because this is one of the holidays my parents hate the most and when ever i bring it up they say always dis it and its really funny.

my family and me came to came to Canada in 2000 when i was 6 years old i new no English at all only language i knew how to speak was Arabic and danka no English. we left sudan becouse of all the war that was happing plus there were harsh living conditions. my last first and last name stand for strength and power. when we got to canada my dad got a job at a furniture store and my mom was a stay home mom at the time.  my family status changed alot during the the years because everyone in my family is very respected by my community.

What I learned on the 1st day

The video we watched in class showed me many different things from people being statistical to being raciest. and i have learned alot from it now i know not to be a hypocrite and criticize people for how they look because now i know they could be thinking the same thing i am  thinking in my in my mind. And many cultures have different ways to communicate food  traditions and other things that create their culture. Cultures have many different ways to communicate with other cultures too. I had learned some very important information the first day and that will help throughout the duration of the class. Learning this information will also help when I enter the field of sports management and have to get everyone on the team buy in to what kind of team concept i want to run.

This year for intercultural communications I look to learn a verity of thing. I look to learn about multiple different cultures and races. I have never really been a culture guy I use to like people only my color and my culture and I only hung out with people from my religion. I have gotten a little better about making new friends that are different colors and race. But I look to improve how to be nicer towards homosexual.
